Open-air musical Bonifatius thrills thousands

A special highlight was the mapping of the facade of the Dom | satis&fy supported the major project for the second time as a technical partner

A radiant production

From August 22 to 31, 2024, Fulda’s Domplatz will once again be the setting for a top-class theater production.

The backdrop is impressive in itself, but the detailed mapping of the cathedral facade transformed it into a breathtaking experience. This was the second time that satis&fy had been the technical partner for this exceptional production, providing support in all areas for a resounding success.

After “Bonifatius – The Musical” celebrated its open-air premiere in 2019 to mark the city’s 1275th anniversary, the city of Fulda brought the grandeur back this year for eight shows together with the production company spotlight musicals. The spectator tiers were a bit larger, the details even more refined, and the effect was, as always, bombastic. The success of the performance was due not only to the captivating acting, accompanied by an orchestra and choir, but also to the stage setting itself. Using four high-performance projectors with an output of 40,000 ANSI lumens, SATIS&Fulfas transformed the exterior façade of the Fulda Cathedral into a prismatic stage backdrop that changed to match the play. Two of the projectors were equipped with special mirror optics for the short distance between the mounting and the projection surface.

Technical and artistic masterpiece

Flanked by two LED walls from the satis&fy inventory, a stage design was created that blended organically into the surroundings of the cathedral city. Another highlight: the round plateau in the middle of the stage, on which a 50k ANSI lumen high-performance projector was used by the performers to present parts of the play. The C1 system from Cyberhoist allowed the trussed truss ring to be moved even during the show. And so it temporarily hovered above the ensemble.

The objective of “outdoor theater quality” was fully achieved: visitors were immersed in a three-dimensionally modeled sound design from L’Acoustic’s speakers, which perfectly conveyed voice and mood throughout the entire performance.

“At ‘Bonifatius’, art and technology merge into a thrilling audience experience. Thanks to our experience from 2019, we were able to be even more precise and detailed. From the overture to the last scene, every note and every ray of light was perfectly timed. The result speaks for itself: standing ovations after the performances, which were of course largely for the actors – but certainly also for the impressive scenery. It is a complete work,” says Lena Wingenfeld, project manager at satis&fy.
