New permanent exhibition in combination with renovation and refreshment
The Autostadt in Wolfsburg is a leisure park, museum and important business location all in one. The Škoda pavilion, which was completely renovated and redesigned last year and now features fresh exhibits and interactive elements, also reflects this trinity. Visitors – with a particular focus on families, in line with the Škoda brand identity – experience the history of one of the world’s oldest carmakers, but also get insights into the brand’s future, which is intensively involved with e-mobility and sustainability issues.
satis&fy was responsible for the renovation, set construction and interior design on behalf of the project-leading agency BECC.
Our many years of experience in the areas of retail design, museum construction and brand experience (including for Nike at the House of Innovation in Paris) also made satis&fy the perfect partner to support the design process and keep an eye on relevant safety aspects. During the several months of reconstruction, our team was responsible for the entire renovation and redesign process, including the coordination of additional service providers. Starting with the tearing down and disposal of the old interior, the construction of floors, ceilings and walls, and the selection of exhibits in the finished pavilion.
Visitors now have several years to take in the new installation in the pavilion. This places different demands on the material and workmanship than a retail campaign with a short exhibition period of just a few weeks. Action and interaction with guests, tangible brand history, a future to look forward to – to express this, satis&fy started with the rough and polished it down to the last detail.
The first step was to create space and, if possible, to create something new from something old. Many of the used pieces of furniture were examined for reusability and processed in the satis&fy workshops in Werne and Karben. The floors in the pavilion were sanded down and sealed with a coating so that they would look as good for the hundred-thousandth visitor as they did for the first. In accordance with the new floor plan, walls were constructed from wood or steel, wallpapered in the brand colors and painted, or partially covered with reflective foil. Together with the new arrangement of almost 50 lamps and meticulous selection of fabrics for furniture upholstery and curtains, the new spatial concept with industrial chic that Škoda had requested was gradually created.
satis&fy also provided advice and support in selecting and presenting the exhibits. A climbing wall encourages young visitors to find and master their own path. For this, satis&fy not only provided the decorative special constructions (for example, colored pencils up to 2.20 meters long), but also ensured compliance with DIN standards. A dandelion that appears to be growing out of a car tire illustrates the sustainable production from recycled material in the pavilion’s Brand Exploration Area. In general, the theme runs through the exhibition. In a quiz for children and adults, there are seed bombs to be won, and an 18-meter-long presentation wall shows visitors which plant material can be found in which Škoda component.
The collaboration between satis&fy, the BECC agency, Škoda and other service providers was also sustainable. Right from the construction phase, satis&fy used its considerable technical expertise to ensure that the cabling was optimally prepared. This detailed work made the rest of the project run more smoothly. A brochure with information on the material properties and care was put together for the acceptance of the pavilion by the Autostadt Wolfsburg. satis&fy will also be on hand to advise BECC and Škoda in the future, for example, on any necessary rework.
